NHR

IFICI
20% flat (2024+ new)
-€1,317 vs Standard
NHR / IFICI flat rates apply only to qualifying activities (HVAA list for NHR, scientific/innovation for IFICI). Mixed-activity income falls back to the standard brackets - these comparisons assume 100% qualifying income, which overstates the savings for many users. Check eligibility with a contabilista before relying on these numbers.
Estimates only. 2026 rates for continental Portugal - Madeira and Açores have reduced rates not modelled here. Withholding-table results may differ from your final annual IRS settlement; consult a licensed contabilista for filing.

Frequently asked
About the Portugal tax calculator.
Are these tax estimates accurate? +
Within ~5% for typical scenarios. The 2026 IRS brackets and Social Security rates are current and verified. The calculator does not yet model the family quotient (joint filing optimization), Madeira/Açores regional rates, or activity-mix scenarios for NHR/IFICI - so high-income or special-regime users should treat results as a guide, not a final number. Always confirm with a Portuguese contabilista before filing.
What's the difference between NHR, IFICI, and the standard regime? +
Standard regime uses progressive IRS brackets (12.5% to 48%). NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) was a 10-year flat 20% rate on qualifying activities - closed to new applicants since 2024-01-01, but existing holders keep it. IFICI (the 2024+ replacement) offers the same 20% flat rate but with a narrower scope: scientific research and innovation activities (see the HVAA list). The calculator's 'Compare regimes' panel shows all three side-by-side.
I'm a freelancer (recibos verdes) in my first year - what benefits apply? +
Two automatic benefits: (1) the IRS taxable base is reduced by 50% in your first year of activity and 25% in your second (CIRS art. 31). (2) Social Security contributions are exempt for the first 12 months from when you open activity, provided you haven't had freelance activity in the prior 3 years (CRC art. 145). Toggle 'Year of declared activity' and the SS exemption checkbox in the form to see the impact - typically €5,000-€8,000/year more take-home.
What are 'deduções à coleta' and how do I use them? +
Deductions à coleta reduce the IRS owed (not the taxable income). Categories include health (15% of receipts, max €1,000), education (30%, max €800), housing rent (15%, max €900 in 2026), and general family expenses (35%, max €250 per taxpayer). When you ask for an invoice with your NIF on Portal e-Fatura, the receipts get logged automatically - see the e-Fatura categorization guide to make sure they land in the right bucket. The 'Deductible expenses' panel in the calculator shows the impact.
Does Portugal really refund VAT on restaurants and gyms? +
Partially. When you ask for an invoice with your NIF, a percentage of the VAT paid becomes a deduction against your IRS. Public transport and newspaper subscriptions get 100% of VAT credited; gyms and sports get 30%; restaurants, hotels, vehicle repairs, and beauty salons get 15%. New for 2026: cultural expenses (books, theatre, museums) at 15%. All categories share a combined €250/household annual cap.
Why is the 'gross to net' ratio different for employees vs freelancers? +
Three reasons. (1) Employees get an automatic €4,587/year specific deduction; freelancers in the simplified regime get a 25% expense presumption (only 75% of gross is taxable, with the 15% receipts justification rule - see Cat B deductible expenses). (2) Employee Social Security is 11% of gross; freelancers pay 21.4% on a 70% base - see the quarterly SS declaration guide. (3) Employees are paid 14 months/year (with holiday and Christmas bonuses); freelancers invoice via recibos verdes however they choose.
What does TAXCLARA do that the calculator doesn't? +
The calculator is a snapshot - one input, one result. TAXCLARA is the year-round version: it connects to your Portuguese bank account (read-only, PSD2-certified open banking), categorizes transactions, and shows your live IRS / IVA / Social Security estimates every month - not just in April when you file. Join the waitlist for early access.
